Part 1: The Two-Process Model of Sleep
Sleep is regulated by two competing forces: Process C (the 24-hour circadian clock governed by the suprachiasmatic nucleus) and Process S (sleep pressure, driven by the buildup of the chemical adenosine while awake).
- Suprachiasmatic Nucleus (the master circadian pacemaker in the hypothalamus)
- Adenosine (the biochemical sleep pressure molecule blocked by caffeine)
- Melatonin (the darkness signal that opens the sleep gate)
